-(AUDIENCE CHEERING) The song that I'd like to hear is a song that was played in my wedding, a month before my dad died of terminal cancer.

The song that we danced to.

And it is I am Your Child.

And that means so much to me as I know it means to you.

Yes, it does mean a lot to me.

It was the first... When I think about I Am Your Child, it was the first... I guess it was the first professional song I ever wrote.

I wrote songs before that, but my dear friend, Marty Panzer, and I, uh, were hired to write, uh, a theme song for a movie.

And the movie opened and closed, and it didn't really make it.

But I just loved... I loved this song.

I do.

I just love this song and I do it whenever I can.

Um, I did it on that, uh... That silly Murphy Brown show.

-(AUDIENCE LAUGHS) -(CHUCKLES) I had a good time.

I had a good time doing that there.

Really, it gave this song new life.

I've sung it at, uh... At various, uh, benefits and... And very, uh, appropriate moments.

I guess the most... I guess the most appropriate moment for me on this song was, uh... My mom died about a year-and-a-half ago, and I was on tour.

And, uh, so when I came back from the funeral, I knew that the whole audience knew that, you know, that had just happened, that I had just gone through it, and I just couldn't see myself coming out and just singing some great up-tempo song, you know?

So I opened the whole show with this song.

And, uh, it was kind of a tribute to my... To my mom.

She was a very musical, very musical woman, very musical woman.

And I guess she gave me my music.

She gave me... my love for music and the talent.

And, uh... And on her deathbed, I went to, uh... To visit her, and I brought my new album, and I played it for her.

I played it.

She was laying there and I played... And the... And the Angels Sing came on, you know?

And I... And I saw her do... (AUDIENCE LAUGHING) I'll never forget it.

Back in the '70s, Adrienne Anderson, my wonderful lyricist partner, um, moved to California, moved out of New York to California.

And, um, she wound up all by herself, missing everybody in New York.

And then I was in New York being hounded by... I was just starting my celebrity, and being hounded by photographers and stuff.

And we were both miserable, and we both met in California and sat on a mountaintop in Mill Valley and just looked out and just... -We were just miserable, so we wrote Daybreak.

-(ALL LAUGH) I guess we just wrote it to cheer ourselves up.
