Brought up as a Quaker in Philadelphia, Ross had a talent for sewing, and received an apprenticeship after school.
During this time, she met John Ross, and the two married in 1773.
When the war started, Betsy made tents, clothing, and blankets for the Americans in her upholstery shop.
Her husband, John was killed guarding a munitions depot from the British.
Now a widow, Ross continued assisting the war effort, and in 1777 was charged with making flags, ensigns, and banners for the Pennsylvania Navy.
Ross married Patriot, Joseph Ashburn soon after this, but their union was short-lived when Ashburn was captured by the British and died in captivity.
Despite being widowed a second time, Ross remarried and continued running her shop until she died in 1836.
