Special | 56m 46s | Video has closed captioning.
In the early 1960s, James Martin was one of the first Republicans to seriously challenge the lock on Alabama politics held by the Democratic Party, nearly defeating incumbent J. Lister Hill in the race for the U.S. Senate. Martin went on to serve in Congress, and as head of Alabama's Department of Conservation, created Alabama's Forever Wild land preservation program.
