MARTIN: We're here in North America, in the northern reaches of the Eastern woodlands.
It's us, the Kratt Brothers!
I'm Chris.
I'm Martin, and today we're doing something really fun.
We're looking for animals named Martin!
(Laughing) There's a creature who lives here at the Ecomuseum.
A creature you've just got to meet.
Meet the pine marten.
MARTIN: What a creature.
For starters, love the name; Pine marten.
And you didn't even name it.
I know!
(Laughing) MARTIN: Oh, she's on the move!
Such a great climber.
Oh, that's the number one pine marten Creature Power.
Climbing ability.
Huh, Chris?
You impressed?
CHRIS: Oh yeah!
MARTIN: They not only are great at climbing in the trees, they climb at full tilt, at full sprint.
They're racing through the trees, chasing after their favorite prey, the red squirrel, who's a great climber also.
Those red squirrels are trying to get away.
The pine marten has to be faster.
CHRIS: Martin, I think she likes you.
(Laughing) (Gasping) Oh, she's sniffing!
Pine martens are always on the scent trail of their prey.
They use their nose for hunting.
MARTIN: She sniffed out your hiking boots pretty easy, Chris.
(Laughing) Hey, I'm not sure which Martin I like better.
This one or my brother?
Hey!
Oh, you're right, the pine marten's way cooler.
CHRIS: Wow!
That is one cool climbing creature!
Named Martin, by the way, with some amazing Creature Powers.
Nobody can run around through the pine trees like a pine marten can.
Yeah, imagine if we had pine marten powers!

The purple martin is the biggest swallow in North America.

The face, the wings, the beak, the tail feathers.
That's it!
The feathers.
I can explain this one... with this.
With a triangle?
Yeah, Jimmy, it's a prism.
Watch, sunlight is made up of different colors.
We can't see them, but when you shine a light through the prism, it's refracted, meaning it splits and you can see the colors, like a rainbow.
Some bird feathers can do the same thing.
When little or no light is reflected, it looks black.
But if you move or more light hits the feathers, it's refracted and produces color!
ALL: Whoa!

Because isn't today a day for the Martins or what?
(Laughing) (Laughing) Martining free and in the wild!
CHRIS: So, summer is here, and there are a lot of great things about summer.
One of the best is it's purple martin nesting season.
And we've got a whole colony of nesting purple martins right here!
CHRIS: Awesome!
Males and females.
MARTIN: Yeah, the males are the black ones that when the sun hits them just right, they shine a bluish purple.
That's why they're called a purple martin.
Well, that's why they're called purple, but I'm still not sure why they're called martin.
But I like it!
They like to sit and rest on their balconies.
(Laughing) MARTIN: They do.
Look, there's a pair right next to each other, the male and the female.
They've got a nest of eggs, or maybe chicks already.
CHRIS: Each pair of purple martins has it's own hole, it's own nesting chamber in the house.
And they're working together to raise chicks.
It's a short summer season, so they're really, really busy.
They've got to feed up their hatchlings so that they're ready to fly.
So they're strong and healthy.
So they can make their migration south to the rainforest, to the Amazon rainforest which is where they spend the winter.
Purple martins are cavity nesters.
They nest in holes.
Sometimes natural holes, but more and more they like to live in the nest boxes that humans set up for them.
And they have to be nesting together in groups.
The more purple martins there are, the more successful their nesting season is going to be.
Whoa, here they come!
Purple martins flying all around!
(Laughing) That is an amazing flying power!
CHRIS: Purple martins are masterful flyers.
They're built for high speed turns and dives.
That's because they chase insects on the wing.
They pick them off in mid-flight, so they have to turn quick to catch their prey.
So purple martins are a bird with some amazing Creature Powers.
Well of course, they are named Martin.
(Laughing) Hey, keep your eyes peeled for this amazing purple martin this summer and keep on creature adventuring!
